ABS filament

ABS filamentProperties of 3D objects printed with ABS:

Appearance: Choice of many colours
Strenght: Very strong
Heat resistance: Good
Flexibility: Light flexible
Specifics: Heated bed required

ABS is a very strong filament type which is available in many colours. The print temperature of ABS is between 220 ° C and 260 ° C. The ideal temperature depends on the print speed, type of hotend, additives in materials (dyes) and the desired appearance of the object. To prevent curling, a heated bed is required for printing with ABS.

The versatile ABS can print objects in any shape. If printed at a higher temperature with ABS the object can achieve a 'shine' appearance. To achieve the desired result, we recommend that you find the ideal print temperature before printing the final object.

ABS stands for acrylonitrile butadiene stryeen and has oil as its base. ABS is a thermosetting plastic and becomes soft when it is heated. After cooling, it retains its shape; ideal for 3D printing of all kinds of objects. .

Benefits of ABS filament: Cons of ABS filament:
  • higher melting temperature, so better able to withstand high temperatures.
  • good mechanical properties
  • fast, flexible and very strong
  • ABS can be melted by Acetone and can be finished with Acetone vapor

  • attracts moisture from the air
  • strong odour, is to be printed in a ventilated environment
  • not suitable for objects that come into contact with food
  • PLA is better for the environment
  • may be discoloured by UV radiation

Tips for 3D printing with ABS filament
  • During the printing of ABS it may release a strong plastic smell, therefore, work in a well ventilated area.
  • Many 3D printers can adjust the temperature during printing. This helps determine what the ideal print temperature is.
  • ABS can withstand heat and is the ideal material for printing that should be close to a hotend. Due to the high melting temperature ABS will be softer than PLA.
  • ABS has a tendency to warp during cooling. The use of a heated bed ensures that the cooling process is more gradual. Also a good initial adhesion layer reduces the loosening

  • ABS Glow in the dark: 1.75 mm 3.00 mm
Print objecten die groen of blauw licht afstralen in het donker.
