Explanation of common printer terms

ADF:

Automatic Document Feeder. With an automatic document feeder, you can scan or copy an entire multi-page document without feeding each sheet individually.

Duplex:

Automatic two-sided printing is a feature that most modern printers have. This function allows a sheet of paper to be printed on both sides automatically.

Pages per minute:

PPM refers to how many pages can be printed per minute, which is a good indicator of print speed.

More printer terms:

We have a greater explanation of the printer features and their functions on the previous printer selection guide page.

Mobile printing

Printers that can connect to the WiFi network are suitable for mobile printing. Most printers have the option to print via a handy mobile app where you can send print jobs to the printer directly from your smartphone or tablet. This is particularly useful for those who do not wish to put the files on to the computer before printing. In the table below, we explain the different ways you can connect to the printer.

Apple AirPrint: With Apple Airprint you can print wirelessly from Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad.
Google Cloud Print:      You can print wirelessly from your phone, tablet or computer via Google Cloud Print.  Note: Google Cloud Print is no longer supported since January 1, 2021. Instead, you can print from the Chrome app on your mobile device.
Print app: Most printer brands have their own apps that allow you to send print jobs to your printer from your mobile device. These are free to download on your Android or iOS device.
NFC: Contactless printing works in a similar manner to contactless payment, it uses mobile devices with an NFC chip (in combination with an app).
WPS: The WiFi protected service is a feature supplied with many routers.  It is designed to make the process of connecting to a secure wireless network from a computer or from any other device easier. This way, you can easily print from any device that is connected to the network. You can connect your printer to the network by holding down the WPS button on your printer, followed by the WPS button on your router (for a few seconds) until it flashes. This will establish a connection. If your printer has a screen or control panel, then you can connect to the router via a WPS pin. You can find this pin in the wireless settings and enter it on your computer to establish the connection.
