LED Christmas lights: 5 advantages to making the switch
LED Christmas lights: 5 advantages to making the switch
More and more people are switching to LED Christmas lights over traditional lights for the festive season. Are there real benefits to making the switch to LED? We examine 5 reasons why LED lights are the best option for Christmas lights when it comes to lighting up your home or business.
1. LED Christmas lights run cheaper than traditional lights
We all want to save money and especially now, with the rising energy and gas prices. There are many ways to save on your energy bill at home or in the office. When reducing energy costs, people often think of insulation and reducing the use of household appliances or energy guzzlers. However, switching to LED lighting is a quick win.
According to the SEAI (The sustainable energy authority of Ireland), 17% of all energy used in households was on lighting & appliances. The SEAI, amongst other experts, has recommended making the switch to LED lighting to reduce costs considerably for both homes and businesses.
So how exactly do LED Christmas lights save you money? An LED light converts 90% of the electricity into light and only 10% into heat. An incandescent light, on the other hand only converts 25 to 30% into light. By switching to LED lights, you can easily save 50 to 90% of energy. So a lot! Making the switch to LED Christmas lighting will reduce your energy bill.
A lot of LED Christmas lights including our own 123ink Christmas lights range also come with a timer feature which means you can light them up at the click of a button and time them to your schedule, not wasting unnecessary energy.
2. Christmas lights with LED bulbs last longer than regular lights
LED lights last much longer than other lights- on average 30,000 to 50,000 hours. This means that once you stock up on your LED Christmas lights, they shouldn’t need to be replaced for the next ten to twenty years!! This is a far cry from the short life of an incandescent Christmas light (with a lifetime of 1,000 hours), halogen lamps (3,000 hours) and energy-saving lamps (5,000 to 10,000 hours). With LED lighting you, therefore, incur fewer costs in the long run, because they stand the test of time.
3. LED Christmas lights are more environmentally friendly
The switch to LED lighting is good for the environment. To generate electricity, fossil fuels such as gas and coal are burned, which causes a lot of pollution for the environment. This is because a lot of CO2 is emitted. The less electricity a light consumes, the less fossil fuels have to be burned and the less CO2 is released. LED lights use up to 90% less electricity and therefore have a much smaller impact on the environment.
In addition, LED lights are also easier to recycle. By returning the lamps free of charge to a WEEE dropoff recycling point, the materials used from the lights can be reused. This means a reduction in the chemical waste generated by other lamps, which also results in lower CO2 emissions.
4. LED Christmas lights light up immediately
When you switch on your indoor LED Christmas lights on your tree or outdoor LED Christmas lights on your rooftop, you’ll immediately see 100% of the light output. There’s no extra warm-up or start-up time. If you were to turn on incandescent, energy-saving or halogen light at the same time, you’d see that these lamps take a few seconds to start up.
With LED Christmas lights, you’re sure to have the brightest house on the block with no waiting time! This means that if you want to turn your lights off periodically to conserve energy, you don’t have to wait for them to get brighter each time they’re switched back on.
LED lights light up instantly and can produce the same colour and intensity of light as traditional lights without hiking up the energy use.
5. Christmas lights with LED bulbs are safer to use
As mentioned earlier, LED lamps convert 90% of the electricity into light and only 10% into heat. This is different from other light types such as halogen and incandescent lamps, which dissipate much more heat and therefore become red hot when they are switched on. Because LED lamps do not have this mechanism, they are a lot less of a fire hazard.
LED lighting also does not contain any hazardous substances. Traditional, incandescent lights contain the hazardous substance mercury, which means that they must also be disposed of with chemical waste after use. If a light were to break on the floor, it’s recommended to leave the house immediately, so this is quite dangerous for a household light. You do not run this risk with LED lights, because these lamps mainly consist of electronic components.
As you can see, there are many advantages to making the switch to LED lights and LED Christmas lights in the run-up to this festive time of year. Check out our large range of LED Christmas lights here.

Common questions relating to LED Christmas lighting
What’s the difference between regular and LED Christmas lights?
The difference between regular and LED Christmas lights is the way in which they light up. LED bulbs are made with light-emitting diodes instead of filaments so they use very little heat. This allows LED Christmas lights to be more energy efficient, sustainable, and cheaper to run.
Can I use LED Christmas lights outdoors?
Christmas lights with LED bulbs can be used outdoors as they are known to be exceptionally durable. As long the LED lights are housed properly, it is safe to use them in an outdoor setting. If you plan on placing your LED lights outside, it is best if you opt for an LED Christmas light that is highly rated on the IP scale. 123ink.ie’s range of LED lights for Christmas come with a weatherproof rating of IP44.
Do LED Christmas lights also come in warm white?
Yes, LED Christmas come in warm white and cold white colours, as well as multi-coloured lights. Warm white LED bulbs create a warm ambient glow, that is comparable to traditional Christmas lights, perfect for your Christmas tree or living room. The cool LED Christmas lights work perfect in gardens to brighten up the outdoor space.
