Photo printer settings

Recommended printer settings for photo paper

It’s important to choose the correct printer settings when printing on photo paper. With some older printer models, your computer will not automatically set the best print settings for your particular print, so it is important to manually adjust the settings. There are several settings that are possible per paper type. We will provide a guideline below but you can also test out the different settings for yourself to see which setting gives the best print results.

You can usually select the paper type from a list. These paper types are usually limited to the paper types of the brand itself. You will not see the 123ink photo brand listed so you can reference the tables below to determine which settings work best in combination with our 123ink photo paper (paper type and print quality).

General tips
  • Always be sure to check the nozzles before printing a photo at high resolution. This will prevent any streaks or sports from being transferred to your photo paper.

  • You should only remove the number of sheets from the package that you intend to print with, leaving the rest in the closed packet, and be careful not to leave surplus photo paper in the printer.

  • Make sure to wipe your printer down as dust particles can stain the damp paper.

  • Set your printer settings to the correct paper type and print quality.

  • For photo paper to remain in the best condition, it should be kept in a closed container (away from sunlight) at room temperature. It is best to avoid any conditions that are too hot, for example, close to a heater. The paper can curl under heat. If this does happen, you can flatten it out by placing it under a large heavy book, for a day.

  • Likewise, if the photo paper is stored in a condition that is too cold, it is not optimal for printing. If it has been in a colder environment, it’s best to leave the photo paper (unpackaged) at room temperature for a while before printing. This gives the paper time to adjust to the ideal room temperature before printing. Always let the paper rest for a while after printing. Although some prints dry instantly, it’s best not to touch the print until it is completely dry as this could cause unwanted fingerprints or dirt to transfer to the paper.

  • Finally, make sure you print on the right side of the paper! Sounds simple, but this is an easy mistake. You can identify the correct side of the paper by the slight colour difference or gloss difference between the front and back. With the High colour paper, the brightest white side is the correct side for printing. Of course, this does not matter with double-sided paper.
