What cartridge does your printer take?

Printer cartridges

There are thousands of different ink and toner cartridges on the market, each with their own numbers or code, colours and capacities, so itā€™s easy to get confused and choose a cartridge that does not suit your printer. If you have picked the wrong cartridge and tried to install it in your printer, you will either have problems with the installation, as the cartridge may not fit, or your printer simply wonā€™t print!

We have a step-by-step process that should help you identify and purchase the correct cartridge for your printer, so read the four steps below, find your cartridge and order today so you can carry on printing in no time!

Step 1. What printer do you have?

The first thing you must identify when you are looking for a cartridge for your printer is what kind of printer you have! Is it a laser or inkjet printer? Laser printers use toner cartridges, while inkjet printers take ink cartridges. Ink and toner cartridges differ in size, components and printing mechanism, so it is important that you can recognise the difference between them. You can read our blog on the differences between ink and toner to brush up on your cartridge knowledge!

Itā€™s also a good idea to identify the brand of printer you own, as you will have to make sure to choose the same brand of ink or toner cartridge. Printer brands range from HP to Brother, Canon to Epson and many more, so itā€™s important you acknowledge the printer brand and model, where possible, before beginning your cartridge search.

Droppie tip
TIP!
If you are having any difficulties identifying what type of printer you have, you can always refer to your printerā€™s manual or any documentation that came with it! This will contain brand and model information.

Step 2. Which cartridge needs to be replaced?

When you have identified whether you need an ink cartridge or a toner cartridge, you will then have to figure out which cartridge needs to be replaced. Has your black or colour (cyan, magenta and yellow) cartridge run out? You can identify which cartridge is running low by looking at the quality of your recent prints. Faded black text usually means your black ink or toner cartridge is running low, while missing or inaccurate colour prints would mean your colour cartridge has seen the end of its days! You may be able to print a ā€˜Test Pageā€™ that displays ink levels, this option is usually found in your printer settings or maintenance menu.

If you are still unsure, giving the cartridge a gentle shake may help to indicate whether there is ink or toner left. Be sure to be careful, as you donā€™t want any remaining ink liquid or toner powder to go everywhere!

Your printer may be able to tell you what cartridge needs replacing!

Many modern printers have a built-in display or control panel. On this display, your printer may pop up with a message telling you to replace your black or colour cartridge. You should also be able to find the ink or toner levels easily through the control panel. This way, you can keep an eye on your cartridges and order replacements before you run out completely!

Step 3. Find the correct ink or toner cartridge for your printer

Once you know what printer you have and what cartridge needs to be replaced, it will be time to search for your new cartridge! Select ink cartridges or toner cartridges on our navigation menu (to the left of the screen) or click on the icons below. When you select your printer brand, you will then be given the option of searching by printer type or searching by cartridge number. Whichever option you choose, you should easily find your printer or cartridge by browsing the page or through our easy-to-use search function! Once you have selected your desired option, you will be able to choose from our wide range of cartridges suitable for your printer.

Use our handy search function to find your ink or toner cartridge!

All printer models will be displayed in alphabetical order and cartridge numbers in numerical order, but if you are browsing and still cannot find your cartridge, you can always use our handy search function at the top of the page. Simply enter your printer model or cartridge number into the search bar at the top of the page and it should pop up almost immediately. Finding your ink or toner cartridge has never been so easy!

Step 4. Choose from our range of original or 123ink version cartridges!

You will find original ink or toner cartridges for your printer, but for a large selection of printers, you will also find 123ink version ink or toner cartridges! We always recommend our own-brand ink or toner cartridges, because there are some real advantages to swapping to 123ink version cartridges. These advantages include:

āœ”ļø High-quality ink or toners, manufactured to ISO-9001 standards
āœ”ļø Cheaper than the original ink and toner cartridges
āœ”ļø Contains more ink or toner than the originals
āœ”ļø 100% lifetime guarantee

When you look at original cartridges and our 123ink version cartridges, you will immediately notice the difference in price and printing capacity. Our own-brand cartridges are the obvious choice for your printer if you want to lower your cost-per-print, but donā€™t want to compromise on printing quality!

Once you have made your choice, you can place your order and we can ship your cartridge from our Dublin warehouse the same-day. If you are having any problems with finding the ink or toner cartridge suited to your printer, donā€™t hesitate to contact us for help!

Common Questions

How do I know what type of printer I have?

You should be able to identify what type of printer you have by referring to your printerā€™s manual. This will provide you with brand and model information. If you no longer have the manual, you may be able to find some information on the housing of the printer. Look for labels inside the front door or at the back of the printer.

Whatā€™s the difference between a laser printer and an inkjet printer?

There are many differences between laser printers and inkjet printers, such as their printing technology and prices, but the most obvious difference is that laser printers use toner cartridges, while inkjet printers use ink cartridges. If you want to know more, you can read our Inkjet printer vs. laser printer blog.

How do I find out which cartridge works in my printer?

To find out which cartridge works in your printer, you will need to know what type of printer you have and whether it takes ink or toner cartridges. Once you know the printer brand and model, you can search by printer model and your model should pop up immediately. When you select your model, it will bring you to the page with the correct cartridges for your printer.

How do I know when my ink or toner cartridge has run out?

If your printer does not indicate that you have run out of ink or toner, you should be able to tell by the print quality! If black texts have become faded or very faint, youā€™re running out of black ink or toner. If you print an image and some colours are missing or the reproduction is not accurate, you may be running low on colour ink or toner.

Why should I use 123ink version ink or toner cartridges?

123ink version ink or toner cartridges are high-quality cartridges that contain more ink/toner at a cheaper price point, so you should choose our own-brand cartridges if you are hoping to cut back on printing costs. We also offer a 100% lifetime guarantee, so you know youā€™re covered if the cartridge is not working as it should.
