Different types and uses of pencils

Pencils are versatile writing and drawing tools with a variety of types designed for different purposes.

Graphite pencils are usually the most common pencils with a core made from a mixture of graphite and clay. They are often used for writing, sketching, technical drawing, and shading. Graphite pencils vary in lead hardness, based on the pencil grading scale.

Mechanical pencils are pencils with a refillable lead mechanism that pushes the lead out as needed. These are mainly used for writing, technical drawing, and detailed sketching. Lead refill sizes range in thickness, depending on what your needs are.

Coloured pencils have cores made of pigment and wax or oil, available in a wide range of colours, mainly sold in sets. These pencils are popular for art, illustrations, colouring, and mixed media projects.

We offer a wide selection of pencils for every project—whether you're writing, sketching, or drawing. Perfect for classrooms, homes, offices, or art studios, our collection has everything you need to bring your ideas to life. Stock up today and always be ready to put your thoughts on paper!

Understanding pencil hardness

Choosing the right pencil lead grade is key for enhancing creativity and work quality, whether you're writing or drawing.

Hard pencils (H) create lighter lines. Bold pencils (B) produce darker lines. Pencil hardness is determined by the graphite-to-clay ratio. More graphite (B) creates soft, dark lines, while more clay (H) yields harder and lighter lines.

Pencils come in various sizes, shapes, and colours, with lead hardness determining durability and performance on surfaces.

Common Questions

How long does a pencil last?

The lifespan of a pencil depends on several factors, including its type, how often it’s used, and how it’s sharpened. There are various contributing factors such as writing pressure, pencil hardness and sharpening method.

What materials are pencil leads made of?

Pencil leads are made of a mix of graphite and clay, not actual lead.

Graphite is the primary material responsible for the pencil's ability to write. It is a form of carbon that creates smooth, dark marks on paper. Clay is mixed with the graphite to control the hardness and darkness of the pencil. More clay makes the pencil harder and lighter (e.g., H grades), while more graphite makes it softer and darker (e.g., B grades).

What is the difference between graphite and coloured pencils?

Graphite pencils are most commonly used for writing and sketching whereas coloured pencils are used for creative purposes.
